Some people wake up and fumble for the snooze button. Part gift, part curse, I never set, or need, an alarm. I wake up around the same time every day, regardless of when I went to bed. My circadian rhythm is more steadfast than Edward Snowden looking for his next passport stamp.
Today I woke up uber early at 5:38 and one thought raced through my mind. It had been far too long since I had smoked chicken. The forecast in the Chicagoland area called for mid-90s. Not ideal for grilling. Couple that with my need to workout after two missed gym sessions. I risk flirtations with foot fungus to burn off the inordinate amount of carbs I eat. While rising with the sun, I fired up my new chimney starter, then washed and seasoned chicken breasts. The smoke hung above the starter in the muggy morning air.
Once the grill was hot, I placed the chicken breasts on the cool side of the grill, covered it, then went about my morning routine. An hour later I was showered and ready for work, plus I had something to motivate me through the workday and post-work gym session.
You know you have a problem when you wake up and have to smoke.
